The Evolution of the Reason for Vacations
We have moved beyond the earliest reasons for vacations, when the populace tried to justify taking time off from work getaways, into some more current reasons that vacations are taken. One of these newer reasons we will call “Adventure Vacations”. They can be for a weekend or an entire summer, depending on the adventure activity, and the destination is as important as the activity.
In short, an adventure vacation is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel to remote, exotic and possibly hostile areas. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity, as tourists seek different kinds of vacations. According to the U.S. based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity, including two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction and engagement with nature.
Adventure tourism gains much of its excitement by allowing its participants to step outside of their comfort zone. This may be from experiencing culture shock or through the performance of acts that require significant effort and involve some degree of risk (real or perceived) and/or physical danger. This may include activities such as mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, mountain biking, rafting, zip-lining and rock climbing. Some obscure forms of adventure travel include disaster and ghetto tourism (covered later). Other rising forms of adventure travel include social and jungle tourism.
Access to inexpensive consumer technology, with respect to Global Positioning Systems, social networking, photography and “flashpacking” have increased the worldwide interest in adventure travel. The interest in independent adventure travel has also increased as more specialist travel websites emerge offering previously niche locations and sports.
If the term flashpacking is new to you, it’s new to the genre also. It is the 21st century’s answer to backpacking and turns the whole meaning and purpose of backpacking upside down. We will explain flashpacking in our next issue.
Adventure recreation refers to active and outdoor activities such as backpacking (wilderness), rafting, climbing, and outdoor survival. A few universities give degrees in adventure recreation, which aim to teach graduates how to run a “vacation package” business in the field of adventure recreation. Along with hands-on training on activities included in adventure recreation, basic courses needed for any business, such as accounting, are required to obtain a degree. Some adventure recreation businesses cater to tourists, while others, such as indoor rock climbing, appeal to people wanting to be active on a regular basis. And, depending on the activity and the people involved, some can involve the whole family and some just an individual or couple.
In contemporary society, the term outdoor adventure generally implies an educational or recreational activity that is exciting and physically challenging. Adventure recreation can be any number of leisure pursuits, which provide exposure to physical danger.
University Outdoor Recreation programs are becoming more popular in the United States. Universities often offer indoor rock climbing walls, equipment rental, ropes courses and trip programming.
Here are some examples of Adventure Vacations:
Hang Gliding, Jungle tourism, Mountain biking, Mountaineering, Outdoor education, Parachuting, Paragliding, Rafting, River trekking, Travel journal, Travel documentary and Urban exploration.
Of course, what is an adventure to some may be too mild for others and vice versa. Only YOU know if climbing that mountain scares you or gives you a thrill.

The Evolution of the Reason for Vacations
Before going further into the reasons for vacations I want to mention a tip if you or someone in your party has a disability that requires attention. We will call the effort to aid those in need as Accessible Tourism.
Accessible tourism is the ongoing endeavor to ensure tourist destinations; products and services are accessible to all people, regardless of their physical limitations, disabilities or age. It encompasses publicly and privately owned tourist locations and vacation packages. The term has been defined by Darcy and Dickson) as:
Accessible tourism enables people with access requirements, including mobility, vision, hearing and cognitive dimensions of access, to function independently and with equity and dignity through the delivery of universally designed tourism products such as getaways, weekend and/or summer trips, services and environments. This definition is inclusive of all people including those traveling with children in prams, people with disabilities and seniors.
Modern society is increasingly aware of concept of integration of people with disabilities. Issues such accessibility, design for all and universal design are featured in the international symposia of bodies such as the European Commission. Steps have been taken to promote guidelines and best practices, and major resources are now dedicated to this field.
A greater understanding of the accessible tourism market has been promoted through research commissioned by the European Commission where a stakeholder analysis has provided an insight into the complexities of accessible tourism. Similarly, the Australian Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Center funded an Accessible Tourism Research Agenda that sought to outline a research base on which to develop the supply, demand and coordination/regulation information required to develop the market segment. The research agenda has now seen three other funded projects contribute towards a sound research base on which the tourism industry and government marketing authorities can now make more informed decisions.
As of 2008, there were more than 50 million persons with disabilities in Europe, and more than 600 million around the world. When expanded to include all beneficiaries of accessible tourism, as defined above, the number grows to some 130 million people affected in Europe alone. In addition to the social benefits, the market represents an opportunity for new investment and new service requirements, rarely provided by key players in the tourism sector.
According to ENAT, the European Network for Accessible Tourism, accessible tourism includes:
Specific problems found by travelers or tourists with disabilities include:
Brief history
Europe and United States of America destinations are home to the majority of the existing companies in this niche. However, around the world many companies are starting to appear as the result of a growing need, largely driven by senior tourism, due to increasing life expectancy in developed countries. Australian researchers, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and other northern European countries are increasingly prepared to receive tourists in wheelchairs, and to provide disability equipment and wheelchair accessible transport.
The Bottom line is simply this. If you have situations involving mobility or other specific, special needs, as you plan where you are going on whatever type of vacation you want to have, check ahead with your destination accommodations and attractions to make sure that provisions have been made for your complete enjoyment with the appropriate devices and practices in place so that you can enjoy the trip without worrying about problems that might arise.

So, you like vacation movies?
So, you like vacation movies?
There are such a variety of movies out there; however, it is impossible to enjoy each and every one of them. Once in a while, a movie will come into existence and you feel as if you must watch it. The horror flick that makes you cover your eyes and dig your fingernails into the arm of the person sitting next to you, the love stories that make you cry from the passion, the comedies that cause you to laugh uncontrollably, and the mysterious films that keep you asking why and wanting more. These are all movies that I’m more than sure we have come across more than once.
These movies are wonderful, but sometimes we may snub them for the simple fact that we cannot relate; sometimes we want movies that we can put ourselves in the actors shoes. With that being said, it is safe to say that vacation movies fall into this category. Most people have been on vacations, had mishaps, all kinds of chaos happened and issues that made them memorable trips and leaving us with stories to tell others for years to come. Sure, there are numerous amounts of vacation films out there to see, but some are considered to be better than others according to how much money was spent on seeing them in theaters across the globe.
Don’t worry, just because a movie is based on a vacation does not necessarily mean that there won’t be more of a plot line; you can still get your tear ducts working and your emotions running wild. For example, “Under the Tuscan Sun” is based on a woman, Frances Mayes, who just got out of a marriage that she didn’t even know was doomed and ends up taking a vacation in Tuscany to move on with her life and finds more than she was looking for. Another film known as “Message in a Bottle” holds this passion when a woman is running along the beach and finds a love note; she falls in love with a mystery man’s words, finds him, and awakens the words written by him.
Yes, it is true; to some people these movies may come off as just being cheesy, but luckily there are some vacation films that are all laughs and smiles for the audiences out there wanting to chuckle. For a majority of movie buffs and simply even occasional movie watchers, the first movies we think of when the word “vacation” comes up are Chevy Chase’s National Lampoon flicks such as: “Vacation”, “European Vacation”, and “Christmas Vacation”; they are full of chaos and possible scenarios. They are classics! Speaking of classics, “What About Bob?” is a wonderful film that’s humorous and quirky, as the movie plays on, it gets funnier because what happens next. It’s unpredictable. Can you just imagine how it would be trying to get away from it all on a relaxing vacation with your family and having a mystery man suffering from an obsessive-compulsive disorder show up at your door and taking all your family’s attention and care away? Then there’s “Weekend at Bernie’s”, this movie takes death and makes it as funny as possible. Two young men, Richard and Larry are invited for a get away at a beach house by their boss, however, there boss is dead when they arrive; instead of letting anyone know they keep it all to themselves to continue on their hopes of a good time. So, next time you want to have a good vacation movie watching experience, which one will you choose?
